I am definitely not an expert and have A LOT to learn about GIMP, but I do know a few things that I can share! Here is what I do to make a QP:
1. ALWAYS start every LO by setting your "New" project to 3600 x 3600 at 300 dpi and set the background to TRANSPARENT. You must have a transparent background to make a QP.
2. Make your LO, add your shadows, and be sure to save VERY frequently. (For future reference, I always save one image at full scale in .xcf and one full size image in .jpgas well as a copy for the galleries at 600 x 600 and 300 dpi.)
3. Once you have saved your LO, remove any journaling, title, and dates that you do not want to include in the QP you will be sharing, as well as the shadow behind your pictures. DO NOT REMOVE THE PICTURES! You can always make a QP before you make your own personal LO, but I rarely do it that way.
4. Now in your layers box, scroll all the way down to your bottom layer, and then scroll up until you find your first place for a picture where you want to create a transparent area. Click on the layer UNDER the picture. Now RIGHT CLICK this layer and choose MERGE DOWN. Continue to MERGE DOWN every layer under the picture until ALL the layers are merged down to the transparent background.
5. Now click on the picture above your Merged Layer you just created and RIGHT CLICK the picture and choose ALPHA TO SELECTION. You should have 'marching ants' around your picture now.
6. Now click on your Merged Layers under the picture in the Layers Box and then on your Keyboard hold down CTRL V
This will cut out the space for your picture. Now you can click on your picture in the layers box and delete it.
7. Continue to follow steps 4-6 to 'cut' a picture place holder for all the pictures in your QP.
8. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Choose SAVE A COPY ( you don't want to replace the copy of your LO so make sure to rename it using "QP" instead of " LO") and change the extention to .png ---this allows people to add a picture but can not change the rest of the papers or elements. Click on the MERGE VISIBLE LAYERS when prompted when saving your LO. DON"T scale the image. Keep at 3600 x 3600 at 300 dpi and 100 %.
Hopefully I didn't miss any steps; I'm doing this by memory as my 2 year old son keeps making me stop to read the same book over and over again! Believe me it will become easier and you won't even have to read the steps after a while! I tried to explain it as clear as possible, but
if you have any questions; you can email me at tigerlilli3@comcast.net, send me a PM, or find me on FB here : www.facebook.com/lynn.goshert
Good LUCK!
